UNDERSTANDING THE PERMA MODEL OF WELLEBING

Positive Psychology is a booming scientific field that focuses on what is right with people and how to help them to flourish and thrive, inside and outside of work. A leading scientist of Positive Psychology, Martin Seligman, has contributed mass amounts of theory and research that have been fundamental to the field’s development.

One of his most profound model’s is called PERMA. This model outlines the five pillars that contribute to positive psychological wellbeing: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment.

Applying the PERMA model results in:

 – 3 x more solutions when problem solving

 – Increased resilience

 – Reduction in the feelings of depression

 – Development of stronger relationships

 – Ability to draw more meaning from work and life

 – Improved engagement

“If all you do is work to fix problems, to alleviate suffering, then by definition you are working to get people to zero, to neutral. Positive psychology is another arrow in the quiver of public policy and psychology through which we can raise wellbeing above zero.”
– Martin Seligman
